Take a walk through the ancient villages and green valleys surrounding Modena in search of the best cherries in the world.
It doesn't take an expert to say that the best Italian cherries come from Vignola. Located about 25 km south of Modena, Vignola is part of the sub-region of Italy famous for fast cars and good food, including fantastic cherries. The local climate and fertile soil, nourished by the nearby Panaro river, as well as an established agricultural tradition, are important factors contributing to the excellent quality of the cherries.
The Rock
After tasting the cherries, you are ready to explore the city: first, we recommend a visit to the ancient Roccaa medieval castle located in the centre of Vignola. Originally built as a defensive fortress, it was later converted into a luxurious house full of elegant interiors and frescoes. From the castle towers, one can enjoy a magnificent view of the cherry tree valley.
The Barozzi Cake
Located near the Rocca, you can find Pasticceria Gollini, a historic pastry shop hidden under the city's arcades. Here you can enjoy a slice of the famous and delicious Barozzi cakehandmade with the freshest ingredients since 1885. Don't ask for the recipe, as it has been a closely guarded secret for over a century.
Taste and Atmosphere in the Heart of Mararo sul Panaro
As the sun begins to set, book a table for dinner at the Osteria Novecento in Manaro sul Panaro, and stop for an aperitif under the oak tree in the beautiful Piazza Matteotti. The restaurant is located in an old mill, overlooking the square. It is a cosy place and offers a simple but appetising menu, including Tortelloni 'vecchia Modena', Gnocchi di patate viola, served with a herb cream, and the famous crescentine with the best cured meats in the area.
